Minister Confirms MoD Looking at Security Risk from Vehicles from China, as Staff Told to Avoid Secret Talk in Cars.

An defence minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the potential security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, and staff have been told to avoid discussing classified information in any vehicles.

Security Advice for MoD Staff

In a recently aired appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss classified material while travelling in China-made vehicles.

The minister explained that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but stressed that security is a concern in all contemporary cars.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a classified level in any kind of vehicle, due to the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in all vehicle, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.

After it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Security Background

The announcement follows claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and bring chaos to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.

This broader defence situation highlights the significance of strong protocols and caution in every aspects of official activities, including vehicle use to communication habits.
